CBT Motorcycle Course For Novice Riders
If you're 17 and older, an A1 license allows you to take off your L plates and use a scooter or a small motorcycle, and carry a pillion rider.

Compulsory basic training (CBT)
CBT is the first course that all riders who are new to riding must attend. It generally takes a full day to complete. If you achieve a satisfactory level at the end of the course your instructor will present you with a certificate of completion that is known as a DL196.
In this class you will be taught the basics of operating a motorcycle. You will be supervised throughout the day by a highly experienced instructor. You will also be given a brief theoretical session to help you understand the highway code, rules of the road and secure way of lane positioning. You'll learn how to maintain and inspect your bike and how to transport passengers (if appropriate).
The next phase of the CBT is practical riding on site. Your instructor will create a safe area in which you can practice your abilities. The course will begin slowly and work through basic safety checks prior to moving off to stop the motorcycle and braking properly. Your trainer will be in contact with you throughout this time and will be there to assist you until they feel confident that you are able to complete the exercises to a safe level.
In this part of the course you'll be introduced to different kinds of roads and traffic conditions. You'll learn to safely navigate roundabouts, traffic lights and one-way streets. You will also be taught the basics of cornering, figure of eight and emergency stops.
This is the final part of the CBT. Your instructor will take you on a variety different roads. You will be in constant contact with your instructor, who will keep track of your progress. You will receive a CBT DL196 Certificate if you prove that you are able to operate a motorbike and deal with different road situations.

Module 1 Theory Test
The first step in obtaining an A1 license is passing the motorcycle test in theory. This 40-minute test assesses your understanding of road rules, traffic signals and general riding safety. To increase your chances of passing, it is advised to study the Highway Code prior to taking the test.
On the day following your CBT you will start your first module of training. You will be riding the bike that is appropriate for the category you are in. If you're aiming at an A1 then this is a Honda Monkey. The course will include plenty of off-road balance and control practice to prepare you for the required moves on the module 1 test. You will also visit a DVSA test centre to familiarize yourself with the marking procedures and procedures associated with each test.
After you have completed your training, you are able to take your motorcycle test at a DVSA approved test center. You'll need to bring your CBT certificate, along with a valid passport or driving licence.
After passing Module 1 After passing Module 1, you will move on to the Module 2 practical test which will be conducted on the road. The examiner will lead you on a brief ride around the area and you'll be given 35 minutes to complete the test independently. The examiner will assess your ability to multitask while following road rules, and will expect you to demonstrate good driving skills.
If you pass both Module 1 and Module 2 After passing both modules, you'll be able enjoy the freedom of an A1 light licence. This will permit you to use bikes up to 125cc without the requirement of a learner's licence. Additionally, you will no longer be required to display your L plates. Additionally the A1 licence will allow you to ride with a pillion and prevent you from having to repeat your CBT every two years. The next step up from an A1 licence is an A license that is not restricted and requires a full driving license.
Module 2 Practical Test
Module 2 is the practical portion of your motorcycle license. After you have passed Module 1 and the theory test, you are now ready to take Module 2. This test will award you an A1 license which allows you to ride bikes with a capacity of up to 125cc, and with a maximum power of 11 BHP. You can also carry a passenger and ride on motorways.
The Mod 2 test is an independent riding test lasting approximately 10 minutes. The examiner will follow you along a predetermined route with varying traffic and road conditions. The route will include busy junctions roundabouts, roundabouts, and dual carriageways. You'll need to be able to navigate in various conditions.
In addition to driving on busy roads in addition, the Module 2 test will assess your ability to observe and anticipate. This is crucial because it will enable you to make decisions quickly when out on the road. Licensing
This course is suitable for those who have completed their Module 1 & 2 completed and are looking to expand their riding skills and build a relationship with their bike. It will require more advanced training and activities such as leaning the bike to manage it at higher speeds. It also covers hazard avoidance and high speed cornering, as well braking and braking at high speed. You will spend 6 hours on the road with a Ride Coach, and you can choose your own bike for this class.

You must be at least 16 years old age to take part in the Basic RiderCourse (BRC). If you are younger than the age of 18 you must have a signature from a parent or guardian on both the Covid Release, Waiver and Indemnification forms (click here) and the Motorcycle Safety Program Parent/Guardian Agreement form. Your guardian or parent will also have to sign the MSF electronic course prior to taking your BRC course.
